How many schools should I apply to?
A balanced college list will embody, at once, your student’s highest admissions aspirations, and a grounded set of higher-probability admissions options, each of which present a unique opportunity for your child to flourish. Further, a successfully balanced college list includes, within it, a robust, extensive representation of a student’s full values and characteristics, at the same time that it remains lean and trim enough to ensure a winning quality in the essays and applications. Navigating a balance and utilizing in-depth statistical analysis, we will help your student discover their way toward a college list they can be excited about, and prepare them to achieve the test scores and accolades that will put them over the top.
What factors go into the decision to apply to colleges in the early rounds?
Applying in the early rounds can increase your student’s chances of admission drastically—in extreme cases by upwards of three hundred percent. However, capitalizing on the opportunity requires, to start, a meticulous analysis of admissions probabilities—among universities on your student’s college list and across the different application rounds—along with a weighing of the varying degrees of commitment among early application options. Most importantly, successfully applying in the early rounds requires a advanced degree of preparation—in developing your child’s applicant profile, preparing for standardized testing, and crafting winning essays—along with a considerable degree of self-knowledge and surety regarding your student’s admissions goals.
What are the relative importances of the application components? Which component is the most important?
Despite a recent pushback on the classically preeminent place of test scores in the admissions process, most colleges have, in the wake of COVID, dialed back on test optionality and moved toward a return of test scores to their use as “the best indicator of an applicant’s potential for college success” and the most reliable universal standard for measuring applicants, one against the other. However, preeminence should not overshadow the fact that there is still considerable variation between universities, in the relative weights given to test scores, relative to other application components, with several big name colleges indeed evaluating applicants without them. At the end of the day, the standard admissions rhetoric, that “an applicant must focus on shining brightly as their authentic self,” couldn’t be more true, but with a critical caveat: you must be your best self, while considering closely how you can fit in synergistically with what your target colleges are looking for; and you must present this fit coherently and convincingly. Therefore, in other words, the balancing of extracurriculars, test scores, and essays is more art than science, and is deeply personal to the unique attributes of each student and the colleges they choose to target.
